People didn’t make more money in July, but they were spending a bit more, a government report showed Friday. The Commerce Department said personal income was unchanged in July. Economists were expecting personal income to increase 0.1%, according to a consensus estimate compiled by Briefing.com.

The recession means competition in pro football this year isn’t restricted to the gridiron — the National Football League and its 32 teams also are battling for the consumer’s discretionary spending dollars. “Overall ticket sales are very positive but difficult in these challenging times,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement. He did not provide overall ticket sales numbers for the current season.
Most small businesses are having trouble finding loans and credit lines these days, but auto dealers are in their own special financing hell. Their inventory is expensive, their industry is in shambles, and their largest lenders are in tatters.

Resume-writing colleague Arnie Bolt shared findings from a recent ExecuNet meeting he hosted, in which a panel of executive recruiters was asked how they work, how they evaluate candidates, and what they look for in resumes and other communications. Universally, the recruiters wanted to see an entire work history on the resume, even if it went back to the year “dot” and included irrelevant information.
