Twitter as a Job Search Tool – Keith Ferrazzi, Sara and Susette

Twitter is … weird. Yeah, weird. I currently have 11,409 followers, and I wonder how many of those followers are spam and fake accounts. I rarely look at the home page to see what people are writing about (I used to, all the time) because it’s so NOISY.

The Career Doctor Blog: Hoping for a Better Offer After Two Interviews

Ward writes:
I had two job interviews, two days apart. The one I am hoping to be
hired with is the latter. At my first job interview I was immediately offered
a job, but it does not meet with my salary requirement nor does it offer any benefits
until after 60 days. How do I tell them I wish to wait until after my
second interview without messing up the first interview?
The Career Doctor responds:
A big reason employers shed a far-less-than-expected 11,000 jobs last month is that temporary staffing agencies found slots for 52,000 additional workers, the most since 2004, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said.
It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the holiday buzz-shopping, decorating, gift-wrapping, over-eating, and entertaining. To avoid going over the edge, take time for some rest and reflection. Think through your goals for the new year. Then make a list, and check it twice!
If finding new employment is on that list, remember that every great job starts with a great interview! So plan now to take stock of yourself, your presentation, your ability to express yourself, your standards for the company you work for. Use the week between Christmas and New Year’s to take strategic steps to insure a bright future.

A Storied Career: Video Has Vastly Expanded the Story Universe: Is It a Whole Different Game?

In my world of curating information in the realm of applied storytelling, the term “digital storytelling” has truly exploded in the last year. It has been big for a few years now and is only getting bigger. I’d estimate that at least a third of storytelling tweets I follow relate to digital storytelling.

I have been in the field of human resources for 20 years and can honestly say that the cover leader is the most important submittal I receive, and the one I read first and most carefully. If you want to write a resume for results, a dynamite cover letter is critical!
Why? Well, with today’s market conditions, and with the ease of applicants only having to punch “send” on an email, it’s not unusual to receive up to a thousand resumes for any job that being advertised!

** Have you ever considered how many “assets” make up one person? Many!

College Recruiter Blog: Google Fighting Back Against Scammers

Desperate times create desperate people. And the economy has created a lot of desperate people over the past couple of years. Unfortunately, desperate people created by desperate times also sometimes fall prey to vultures. I don’t know how these scum sleep at night or how they rationalize ripping off anyone but certainly not people who are suffering.
I think back to my time before being self-employed, and ponder on what I did for my career.
On the one hand, I did all the right stuff to build the content of my resume (titles, schooling, etc.).
On the other hand, I did the bare minimum.
I assumed. And I was lazy.
I think I was normal.
I’m not saying that normal means people who don’t do what they *should* … rather, I’m saying I see a lot of people who don’t do what they ought to do.
Bare minimum vs. doing all the right things.

Volcano Acrostic Poem

Violence from the Underworld
Overcomes the peaceful earth.
Love is melting,
Creating scars of ash and tears.
Actions, once forgotten
New magma erupting
Only cinders whisper here.
